McCartney has ‘New’ song in animated film

MANILA, Philippines – As inventor Flint Lockwood returns to the island of Swallow Falls to save the world – again! – he’ll be doing it to the beat of Paul McCartney’s brand new single, “New,” which will be featured in the film.

“New,” now available for sale as a digital download, is the title track of McCartney’s, well, new album, set for release in October.

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s mouth-watering comedy from 2009 left off.

Delicious mission

Mishap-prone inventor Flint Lockwood thinks he has saved the world after destroying his infamous invention – a machine that turns water into food, causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes.

But Flint soon learns that his invention has survived and is now creating food-animals – “foodimals.”

Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other foodimals to save the world – again.

The film and its precursor are based on an American children’s book by illustrator Ron Barrett and his wife, writer Judi Barrett.

But the title and the narrative have the joy and drive of an English farce, which befit the collaboration of British musicians McCartney, 71, and his producer, DJ-keyboardist Mark Ronson, 38.

“Meatballs 2” is a notable addition to McCartney’s film work (a spare body, compared with his prolific songwriting), including the theme for the James Bond thriller “Live and Let Die”  and music for the 1968 trippy animation “Yellow Submarine” – a highlight of his work with his former band, The Beatles.

“We’re thrilled and honored to have Paul’s infectious and inspiring song in the film,” said Lia Vollack, president of Worldwide Music for Sony Pictures.

“The sequence in the film is about Flint Lockwood optimistically beginning what he thinks will be a new and exciting chapter in his life, so as soon as we heard ‘New’ we thought that everything about it was perfect.”
