MANILA, Philippines – Sir Elton John will be honored for his work in philanthropy as the recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Foundation made this announcement on Thursday, October 3, adding that the singer-songwriter-pianist will be conferred the award in line with its Centennial.

The conferment in Washington, D.C., will be held on October 30 in ceremonies billed, “A Celebration of American Philanthropy.” The Rockeller Foundation said it will also bestow a grant on the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Apart from his prolific work in music, notably his body of songs which serves as a vibrant soundtrack for the 1970s milieu and onwards, Sir Elton has championed the welfare of people afflicted with HIV, helping promote a keener understanding in this sector’s behalf, amid the prejudice initially confronting HIV patients. The artist’s foundation has also supported medical endeavors seeking to treat or cure HIV.

‘Stigma, discrimination’

“At The Rockefeller Foundation, we are constantly searching for innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” said foundation president Judith Rodin. “As such, we are honored to recognize Sir Elton John for his unwavering commitment and contributions to the fight against HIV/AIDS, and for the innovative work he has done not just targeting the disease, but also the stigma, discrimination, politics, and community-related concerns associated with it.”

In response, the singer-songwriter said, “From the beginning, it has been my steadfast belief that we would not be able to treat or cure HIV/AIDS when people living with the disease or very vulnerable to it are shunned, hidden, or denied their human rights.”

Sir Elton also said, “It is an honor to receive this Award from The Rockefeller Foundation, an organization that has been at the forefront of leveraging innovation, in all its forms, to promote the well-being of humanity around the world.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award is an annual citation for an outstanding individual with a comprehensive involvement in addressing social or environmental issues. Among the past recipients are former US president Bill Clinton and Indian businessman Ratan Tata. – with reports by PRNewswire/Rappler.com
