MANILA, Philippines – After nearly two years since the last season concluded, the anticipated 3rd season of British crime thriller “Sherlock,” is set to air on January 19 in the US, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The modern-day revival of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle detective tale stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson.
According to the report, the 3rd season of the series will kick off with “The Empty Hearse,” which will tackle the mystery of Sherlock’s death.
In the following episode, “The Sign of Three,” Watson gets married to Mary Morstan, played by Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington.
The final episode, “The Last Vow,” will air on February 2, signaling a new waiting period for the next season.
Producers told Entertainment Weekly that the delay for the 3rd season was due to the huge demand for the two lead actors, which prompted the production to be broken into chunks rather than being continuously filmed.
In the course of the production, Cumberbatch was cast in “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” while Freeman played major protagonist Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit” films.
Despite the delay, PBS channel producer Rebecca Eaton says this is so far the best season and that the “fantastic and jaw-dropping” new episodes are worth the long wait.
“Sherlock” won in the British Academy Television Awards in 2011 for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor (Martin Freeman), along with several other nominations. The show has also been nominated for several Emmy Awards.
