LONDON, England – Who would have thought that 4 children all under the age of 13 would beat veteran actresses in the 2012 British Theatre Awards? Eleanor Worthington Cox and Cleo Demetriou, both aged 10, along with Kerry Ingram and Sophia Kiely, both aged 12, wowed the world with their performances in the musical rendition of Roald Dahl’s Matilda.
The girls are no strangers to the theatre world; each is currently receiving education in the arts. All have previous onstage acting experience, pre-Matilda, too.
Ingram has performed in Annie, The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, and Oliver! She currently attends Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead. Kiely has performed in a tour of Ballet Shoes, and attends the Royal Academy of Dance. Demetriou has been performing in the West End since the age of 7. Cox, a student in Formby School of Dance and Performing Arts, was part of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Cox, the youngest of the 4, is also consequently the youngest to receive the Best Actress award in the Lawrence Olivier Awards’ 36-year history.
Aside from breaking the age record, Matilda (directed by Matthew Warchus), also broke the record for most wins, receiving a total of 7 awards including Best Actor (Bertie Carvel), Best Director, and awards for set design (Rob Howell), musical score (Simon Baker), choreography (Peter Darling), and new musical.
Reuters states the musical was nominated 10 times, the maximum number of categories possible. – Rappler.com
