Red Carpet Recap: The 71st Golden Globes

MANILA, Philippines – The red carpet looks at the 2014 Golden Globes are always some of the most hotly anticipated of the awards season. Joining the list of the red carpet staples like ball gowns and black dresses are some other fresh trends we’ll be watching for on the red carpets of other upcoming awards shows. 

Fiery colors 

 

Dramatic hues like bright orange and red were notable in this awards show.  

American Hustle was a big winner at this year’s Globes, and so was Amy Adams – in more ways than one. Her plunging gown in those two gorgeous, deep colors showed off her fair complexion, and was the perfect daring choice for the award-winning actress. 

Amy, who won the Best Actress award in the motion picture (musical or comedy) category, thanked director and screenwriter David O. Russell during her speech, saying, “Thank you so much for letting the world know that a princess can punch and wear a low-cut gown.”  

Emma Watson, who presented at this event, also stunned in a short-sleeved red number, held together by a thick strap around her lower back.  Her non-traditional look also featured a simple pair of black trousers worn underneath. 

Amy Adams’ fellow nominee, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, also stunned in an orange gown. It was a big night for her as she was nominated twice: for Best Actress in a TV comedy for Veep, and for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Enough Said. 

Though she lost to Amy Adams in the film category and to Amy Poehler in the TV category, her red carpet look was a definite winner. 

Hollywood newcomer Lupita Nyong’o, a Best Supporting Actress nominee for her role in 12 Years A Slave, has been making waves in the fashion world as well. Her flowing off-the-shoulder gown was a stand-out at this event and provided dramatic contrast against her simple hair and makeup look. 

Red carpet maternity looks 

 

A few stars who are currently expecting also shut down the red carpet with their glamorous maternity looks.  

Kerry Washington, a Best Actress in a TV drama nominee for Scandal, took to the red carpet in a simple gown that highlighted her baby bump. 

Kerry married her husband Nnamdi Asomugha in a small wedding ceremony in 2013. 

Opting for a less fitted outfit, presenter Drew Barrymore chose a short-sleeved number with intricate floral details and a sheer yoke. Bright lips and shoes matched the bold colors in the gown’s pattern. She is expecting her second child with her husband, art consultant Will Kopelman. 

On the other side of the spectrum, presenter Olivia Wilde had all eyes on her on the red carpet. She showed up in a fitted, glittery floor-length gown. The star is engaged to actor Jason Sudeikis. 

Olivia was on hand not just to present; she also belongs to the cast of two nominated movies: Her, nominated for Best Motion Picture (musical or comedy), and Rush, nominated for Best Motion Picture (drama). 

Pale metallics and dresses in nude shades

It’s easy to see why these paler dresses are red carpet staples. The right shade of nude can illuminate the face, brighten skin, and, in the case of shoes, elongate legs. 

Sarah Paulson’s short, tiered dress was actually silvery and not nude, and showed off her creamy skin perfectly. The actress starred in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story series; the latest, American Horror Story: Coven, was nominated in the best mini-series or motion picture made for television category. 

Michelle Dockery’s strapless gown featured an uneven hemline and metallic flecks that appeared gold in some photos, and silvery in others. The actress is also a pro at working her trademark short hair, which is always artfully coiffed.

The actress was there to support her show Downton Abbey, which was nominated for Best Drama Series. The show lost out to HBO’s Behind the Candelabra. 

House of Cards actress Robin Wright rushed up the stage to Best Actress in a TV series (drama) award in a simple nude halter gown, which set off her cropped blonde ‘do and simple makeup perfectly.  

Zooey Deschanel contrasted the fairy-like, ethereal quality of her tulle skirt with the cropped, beaded bodice and a strong red lip. This was a big night for her as Zooey was nominated in the Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series category for New Girl, but she ultimately lost out to a thrilled Amy Poehler.  

LBDs (long black dresses) 

 

Gowns in black will forever be a red carpet favorite for many artists, and this year was no exception. Sofia Vergara showed off her enviable figure in one of her favored silhouettes, featuring a fitted bodice. A large turquoise statement necklace broke up all that black. 

Sofia was on hand to support Modern Family, which lost out to Brooklyn Nine-Nine in the best Comedy Series category. Sofia also lost out to Dancing on the Edge’s Jacqueline Bisset in the Best Supporting Actress (TV drama, miniseries, or motion picture) category. 

Jessica Chastain, who picked up a Golden Globe last year for her work in Zero Dark Thirty, also wore a beautiful strapless black gown. Her gorgeous red waves were all the more vibrant in contrast to her dark look. 

Host Amy Poehler’s red carpet look was an asymmetrical number featuring a sleek belt and a tiny cut-out in the bodice. This is Amy and co-host Tina Fey’s second outing as Golden Globe hosts, and Amy also took home the Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series prize.  

Best Actress nominee, The Good Wife actress Julianna Margulies also looked lovely in a short-sleeved black gown with a deep neckline. Her dress featured gold details on the shoulders and near the hemline. 

Princess gowns 

Among others, two actresses opted for princess-worthy ball gowns. Jennifer Lawrence picked up her Best Supporting Actress prize for American Hustle in a strapless Dior gown, while The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco wore a floral gown in a similar strapless style to the event.  

Two-toned outfits 

Other stars also made waves on the red carpet in looks featuring more than one solid color. 

Taylor Swift, a nominee in the Best Original Song category for her tune “Sweeter Than Fiction,” which was featured in the movie One Chance, stood out in a bright, pinkish red gown with a bustle and a black bodice. 

Taylor lost out to U2 in this category. The Irish band won for their song “Ordinary Love” for the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. 

Julie Bowen showed off her slim figure in a deep red and violet two-toned dress. Though not nominated for an individual award, the actress showed up to support her hit comedy, Modern Family. 

Comedian Aubrey Plaza cheered on Parks and Recreation co-star and Best Actress winner Amy Poehler in a beautiful purple creation by Oscar de la Renta. Her dress appears deceptively simple, but a large bow in the back jazzes up the look. 

Flounce vs. Sleek and structured 

Presenter Paula Patton’s statement-making white gown made quite an impression on viewers. The unusual design stood out against other looks, which were simpler in design by comparison. Do you like the flounce details cascading from her left shoulder? 

Masters of Sex actress Caitlin FitzGerald wore a simple, structured blue dress. Her look was far from stiff, as her gorgeous smile and simple hairstyle keep the whole look polished and feminine.
