MANILA, Philippines – After a two-year break between the second and 3rd seasons, British crime thriller Sherlock, has concluded its latest series, signaling a new period of anticipation for season 4 – and possibly, season 5.
According to Radio Times, Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss confirmed that the next two seasons of the detective series have been plotted out, with season 4 already comissioned for production.
While the 5th season has yet to be ordered, Moffat and Gatiss said that their plans extend to season 5 and that their ideas were “the best [they’ve] ever had.”
“Rather excitingly, Mark and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future,” Moffat reportedly said during a screening of the season 3 finale.
The two said they focused on the twists and turns of the story, a contemporary take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective novels.

“So we have got plans – but our plans don’t tend to be ‘Let’s blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world’ they tend to be ‘What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?’”
After a Twitter Q&A with fans on January 12, Moffat and Gatiss thanked viewers for watching, saying they are excited for future plans.
“The game will never be the same again,” read their tweet on BBC’s account.
Thank you for watching. We are honestly most excited about what we're planning next! The game will never be the same again. ^SM & MG

In an earlier report by Radio Times, lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch said that scheduling will determine the fate of the 5th season. The long gap between seasons was partly due to the huge demand for Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman (John Watson), who took on major film productions in the previous year.
“It just depends on Martin and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven’s ability. I’d love to keep it going,” said Cumberbatch at the South Bank Show Awards in March 2013.
For now, the waiting game is back on.
