Benedict Cumberbatch meets ‘Murray-arty’ on ’Sesame Street’

MANILA, Philippines – Even Sherlock Holmes can’t resist a trip to Sesame Street.  

Granted, Benedict Cumberbatch was not exactly in character as the world-famous detective when he made an appearance on the beloved children’s show, but there were plenty of references to his famous alter-ego. 

In the video clip uploaded by PBS, Benedict can be seen saying, “Hello, I’m Benedict Cumberbatch,” before Murray Monster enters, calling himself “Murray-arty.” 

Channeling the Sherlock villain James Moriarty, Murray-arty poses a counting challenge to Cumberbatch: are there more apples or oranges on the table? Count Von Count’s help is enlisted and Benedict, like Sherlock, solves the mystery, of course.

This comes just a little after the Sherlock Season 3 finale aired in the US on February 2 (the season finale first aired in the UK on January 12). This is a welcome treat for the show’s millions of fans who are already mourning the end of yet another season, as well as anticipating the return of Season 4.  

Fans could have a potentially long wait ahead – almost two years passed between seasons one and two, another two between seasons two and 3. In that time, lead actors Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman appeared in several prominent movies, even working together on 2013’s The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (Freeman in the title role as Bilbo Baggins, Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug). 

Notably, Cumberbatch also recently appeared in two Hollywood films now receiving awards show buzz: August: Osage County, nominated for 2 Oscars, and 12 Years A Slave, nominated for 9, including Best Picture.
