MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American Malaya Watson continues to her winning streak on American Idol as she entered the top 9 on Thursday night (Friday, March 21 in Manila).

With this week’s theme of Top Billboard Hits, Watson sang her version of Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,”  on Wednesday night (Thursday, Manila) that drew positive feedback from the judges.

Jennifer Lopez said she was initially worried about Watson’s song of choice but commended for singing the lyrics right.

“I’m not gonna lie. I was ready to kinda hate on you in the beginning. I was, because I said to Keith, ‘she’s to sing ‘When I Was Your Man,’ is she gonna change it, what’s she gonna do with it’, and you decided to just leave it the same, and it didn’t affect me at all,” she said.

“I had goosies. When you hit the middle of that song, it was sung so beautifully, so tenderly, with so much feeling and love. It was awesome. Beautiful,” she added.

Judge Harry Connick Jr. said that he loved that she sang the song sincerely, but at the same time also told her to study different chords with different musicians.

“Work with the music people and ask them to show you different chords and how you can sing runs over the different chords because sometimes they will play one chord and the notes that you’re singing in your runs won’t match all of the notes in the chord. It’s a quick fix. It’s something that you could learn very, very quickly, and I think it will enhance your experience as a singer,” Connick Jr. suggested.

Keith Urban on the other hand praised her for the song choice to “pull things back.”

Meanwhile, San Francisco native MK Nobilette was eliminated after getting the lowest number of votes this week. She was in the bottom three alongside Dexter Roberts and Majesty Rose.

She sang “All of Me” by John Legend in an attempt to get the judges to use their save card, to no avail. – Rappler.com
