MANILA, Philippines – Actress and TV host Kris Aquino said that she is hoping the friendship between her and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada will not be affected by the recent issues against him.
The senator on Monday, June 23 surrendered to authorities after the Sandiganbayan ordered his arrest on charges of plunder.
During the Monday episode of Aquino and Abunda Tonight, Kris, who is close to Jinggoy, said that their friendship has gone through the test of time.
“Sa pulitika, marami nang napagdaanan pero siguro napatunayan na na we have remained friends and I pray that we will continue to remain friends,” she said.
(In politics, we have been through a lot, but I guess we have proven that we have remained friends and I pray that we continue to remain friends)
Unlike her reaction to Sen. Bong Revilla’s privilege speech, which she defended her brother President Benigno Aquino III, Kris appeared to be more understanding with Jinggoy’s situation. (READ: Kris Aquino reacts to Bong Revilla’s privilege speech)
She also praised Jinggoy’s wife Precy for being always being by her husband’s side.
“Sa dami ng pinadaanan niya, sa hirap at ginhawa, napatunayan niya talaga.”
(With so many things she’s been through, through thick and thin, she has proven it.)
She also said that prior to his arrest, Jinggoy called her before and after his privilege speech.
“Sinabi niya sa akin, ‘Alam mo, mare, lahat ng ito ay kaya ko; si Gil lang ang nahihirapan talaga ako,'” Kris said referring to the senator’s youngest child.
(He told me, ‘You know mare, I can do all of this; it’s just Gil I’m really worried about.)
Kris also said that she will pray for the family.
“Our prayers are with you… the merits of the case are already there. I’m sure they have the best lawyers possible. At kung ano ang katotohanan, lalabas at lalabas ‘yon,” she said.
(Whatever the truth is, it will come out.)
“Pero there are people involved here and kay Jinggoy, kay Precy, sa buong pamilya nila, we will be praying.”
(There are people involved here and to Jinggoy, to Precy, to their whole family, we will be praying.)
Jinggoy is accused of pocketing more than P183 million (US $4.18 million) in kickbacks in the biggest corruption scam to hit the country involving high-ranking and legislative officials. (READ: Court orders arrest of Jinggoy Estrada).
Jinggoy is the second senator be jailed on plunder charges. Last week, Sen. Bong Revilla surrendered to the authorities and is currently detained at Camp Crame. –Rappler.com
