Gabby Eigenmann on missing dad Mark Gil, moving on
The actor talks about coping with his father's death, being a father figure to his siblings, and comments on sister Andi's love life and recent break-up

MANILA, Philippines  Actor Gabby Eigenmann, the son of the legendary actor Mark Gil who died last September 1, has opened up about facing his recent ordeals and moving on.

He said that the death of his father was one of the greatest battles he had ever faced in his lifetime, adding that it was a roller coaster ride for everyone.

Kanya-kanya kasi kaming way of grieving and eventually of moving on. In my case, nilalamon ko lang sa trabaho so I am busy with work. Iyon nga, matatapos na din ang show namin so at least may time ako to grieve nang tama.

Feeling ko nagkasabay-sabay so with the success of every project, there is a battle na kailangan mong tahakin,” Gabby said during the press conference held in Tomas Morato for Perry Lansigan’s talents Tuesday, September 30.

(We each have a different way of grieving and eventually of moving on. In my case, I busy myself with work and since our show is finally coming to a close, at least I would have more time to grieve in the right way.

It’s all happening at the same time so with the success of the projects I am doing, I believe that there is always a battle that needs to be faced.).

According to Gabby, he has been posting photos on his Instagram to reminisce about the past and to remember what his dad has done as a father, as an actor and as a person. He believes that being professional with his craft is what his dad would want for them. Up to the last minute, Mark Gil was still working.

“The show must go on,” he said.

Gabby said that the family will take some time off by going to Hong Kong with his sister Andi and cousin Geoff.

Ilalabas lang naming iyong kids and to go to Disneyland, of course. First time din ni Andi and Geoff to go there,” he said.

(We’ll be treating the kids to go to Disneyland, of course. It’s actually Andi and Geoff’s first time to go there, too.)

Now that his dad is gone, the question is, how will he be a father figure to his siblings?

Nung lumalaki kami, parang matagal na naipasa sa akin ni daddy ang responsibility being a big brother to them pero eventually, naging father to them na din. Pag kailangan nila ako, I will always be there for them. Hindi ako nakikialam sa kanilang buhay and if they want me to get to involved in their lives, I’ll be there.”

(When we were growing up, the responsibility of being a father figure was passed to me by my dad. If they need me, I will always be there for them. Of course, I just don’t meddle with their personal lives.)

Dading and Andi

As his show on GMA 7 Dading comes to an end, Gabby said that he considered the role an opportunity to shine, being the lead actor.

Hindi pumasok sa isip ko na akin ito. It was always a team effort. Whatever it is na ibigay sa akin, I’ll do my best,” he said.

(I never really thought that this was my show. It had always been a team effort. Whatever is given to me, I’ll just do my best).

In the show, he plays a gay father.

His dream role is to have the whole family in one show – whether it be a movie or a TV show.

“There was an attempt before but to get us all together, now that’s a show that I would be happy to star in,” he said.

With regard to the split between Andi and Jake Ejercito, he has this to say: “It happens. They were happy when they were together. If being away from each other or being separated would make them happy as well, then that’s where I’ll be too. Jake has been good to my sister and the same way with Andi to Jake. We would never close our doors on him. Pero hintayin natin. Baka maging sila ulit. (But let’s wait, they might get back together again),” he jokingly said.

On Sunday September 28, Andi confirmed that she and Jake ended their relationship.

Following Andi’s interview, Jake released a statement saying that the break-up was painful because Andi is very important to him. He also thanked those who did not judge him, saying that it would be the last time he would address the issue. –with reports from Alexa Villano/Rappler.com
