Dolphy regains sensation, which means he is also feeling pain — and doctors believe this is good.

'SMILING AGAIN.' The comedy king is also making his family and fans smile. Screen grab from YouTube

MANILA, Philippines – Amid their ordeal, positive developments in the condition of king of comedy Dolphy have given the Quizon family reason not to lose hope.

“He is able to smile for the first time since his hospitalization,” said Dr. Eric Nubla, director of Makati Medical Center’s patient relations department in a press conference on Tuesday, June 26.

Dolphy is now more responsive as he starts to regain his senses; he can now feel tickling and pain, noted Nubla.

He has been in the Intensive Care Unit of the Makati Medical Center since June 9 for complications from his pneumonia. He was diagnosed 5 years ago with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a progressive disease that makes breathing difficult.

Since his hospitalization this month, Dolphy has dipped to a very critical state at least twice, but his family and fans never stopped praying.

His platelets are still low, and he still has to undergo blood transfusion Wednesday, June 27. Doctors also want him to continue with his dialysis.

A tabloid reporter tried to sneak into Dolphy’s room to get a photo of the comedy king, pretending she was one of the siblings. The family is pleading for respect for privacy from the public.

“He is still in the restricted area of the ICU, which means only a limited number of family members can visit him, to protect him from bacteria and viruses,” said Dr. Nubla. “He is awake more, but he also needs more peace and quiet now.” – Rappler.com
