August movies to watch

MANILA, Philippines – For some, it’s a quick trip out of town; for others, it’s a day at the spa.

And for those who can only afford a quick (and relatively cheaper) R & R, it’s the movies.

If you’re the type who makes it a point to watch a movie every week, then here’s a list that may help: a run-down of movies scheduled to be screened in Manila theaters in August. 

“Brave” – August 1

Studio: Walt Disney Studios

Genre: Animated family adventure

Voice cast: Kelly MacDonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd

Merida is a skilled archer and the impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

“That’s My Boy” (formerly “I Hate You, Dad”) – August 15

Genre: Comedy

Cast: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg

While still in his teens, Donny (Adam Sandler) fathered a son, Todd (Andy Samberg), and raised him as a single parent up until Todd’s 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Todd’s world comes crashing down on the eve of his wedding when an uninvited Donny suddenly shows up. Trying desperately to reconnect with his son, Donny is now forced to deal with the repercussions of his bad parenting skills.

“Total Recall” – August 22

Studio: Columbia Pictures

Genre: Sci-fi, action-adventure

Cast: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For factory worker Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), despite having a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life — real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But the procedure goes horribly wrong and Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police [controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), leader of the free world] Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love and his true fate.

“The Odd Life of Timothy Green” – August 22

Studio: Walt Disney Studios

Genre: Drama comedy

Cast: Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton

“The Odd Life of Timothy Green” is an inspiring, magical story about a happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim — and their small town of Stanleyville — learn that, sometimes, the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. 

“The Campaign” – August 29

Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

Genre: Comedy

Cast: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis

When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.  

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.  

As election day closes in, the two are locked in dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other.
