‘The Newsroom’ arrives in Asia

The drama series that has made it to the top of broadcast journalist Dan Rather's list is now on HBO Asia

MANILA, Philippines – On July 17, press gathered at Restaurant 9501 of ABS-CBN’s ELJ building to watch the first episode of Aaron Sorkin’s HBO original drama, “The Newsroom.”

The show stars Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy, anchor and managing editor; Emily Mortimer as MacKenzie McHale, McAvoy’s ex-girlfriend and new executive producer; John Gallagher, Jr. as James “Jim” Harper, producer; Alison Pill as Margaret “Maggie” Jordan, associate producer; Thomas Sadoski as Don Keefer, former executive producer; Dev Patel as Neal Sampat, writer of McAvoy’s blog; Olivia Munn as Sloan Sabbith, financial analyst and anchor; and Sam Waterston as Charlie Skinner, news division president.

All of them work for the fictional Atlantis Cable Network (ACN) on the news program “News Night.” According to Entertainment Weekly, the characters produce a news show nightly “in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.”
