Actress in beauty pageant

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American actress Megan Young is in this year’s Miss World Philippines at the grand ballroom of Solaire Resort & Casino.

Megan is the lone celebrity in the prestigious beauty contest as presented by Ms. Cory Quirino on August 18. The 26 official candidates were presented to the media on July 31 at the resort complex.

For the 23-year-old actress, who took part early in her career in the GMA talent show “StarStruck,” this is the right time to join the pageant. Megan made the decision last January, which her parents and friends immediately supported.

“My family is very happy and excited for me joining the pageant. They told me to be focused on what I have to do and to be confident about myself,” Megan said. “They were so happy to know about my decision to join the contest.”

During the media launch, Megan walked that confident stride in her swimsuit. What was on her mind when she walked onstage?

 “I just thought that I am on a beach. But I did some sacrifices to get the figure that I want, to be this sexy. I am eating healthy and I stopped eating rice for now. I have to [go through a change in] lifestyle.”

The tagline of Miss World is beauty with a purpose. What is her purpose as a beauty queen?

“Well, I have always believed in affirmation,” Megan said. “I’ve always wanted to push and go forward. I believe also that we ought to be aware of what is happening around us. I want to become a peace ambassador which is what I am for a year now.”

In her past interviews, Megan had often expressed her desire to join a beauty pageant. She was just waiting for the right time.

She has found that opportunity even if it means giving up some of her showbiz commitments.

Being from showbiz, Megan warmed up easily to the other contestants.

“I am always the first to ask the girls their names so [it’s like an] interview [in a way],” she said, laughing.

Will the friendly gesture bring her the special award of Ms. Congeniality?
