MANILA, Philippines – It’s understandable that Kapuso actress Kris Bernal was constrained to opt out of Gil Portes’ indie film “Ang Tag-araw ni Twinkle,” an entry to this September’s Sineng Pambansa Film Festival of the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

FHM cover girl Ellen Adarna has replaced Kris in this film, which is now a career vehicle for the sexy newcomer.

According to Direk Gil, Ellen took directions very well. She did the daring love scene with Dominic Roco, and she was spot on in that scene where she was snorting cocaine.

“It’s a very daring and bold role for me. I surprised myself,” Ellen said.

“Hindi ko alam na magagawa ko pala ang mga eksenang iyon.” (I didn’t realize I could do those scenes.)

“When they hired me for the role of Twinkle, I knew that the role required me to bare myself.

“It’s quite all right, because in my photo shoots for FHM, almost naked naman ako. Kaya there’s nothing to be coy about.

“This is a big role for me kaya hinanda ko na ang sarili ko [that’s why I really prepared for the part].”

Second choice

Being the second choice wasn’t an issue for Ellen.

“Hindi raw kasi kayang gawin ni Kris ang hinihingi ng role [Kris couldn’t do what the role required of her] because she has this teleserye where she has to be wholesome.

“She has a valid reason not to do the movie or else she’ll lose an endorsement.

To be sure, Kris will always have the chance to give her acting some diversity in the future.

“What’s important is that I was chosen to portray Twinkle and I did my best,” Ellen said.

“For me, it’s the role of a lifetime. I will never forget doing this movie as long as I live.”

Ellen says she immediately related to the role of Twinkle, a good-natured girl turned rebel, because she was a rebel herself in her teens.

“Basta nagwala na lang ako [I was wild then],” said this 24-year-old who comes from a wealthy family in Cebu.

“I became a party girl and had friends na masyadong mga adventurous sa buhay [who were too adventurous].

“I wanted that life and I did things that you can’t print!” she laughs.

“I tried drugs but I never became addicted. Basta tinikman ko ang mga bawal noon pa kaya tapos na ako diyan.” (I’ve tried all the forbidden things and I’m done with that.)

“Ngayon, wala naman akong pinagsisisihan sa mga ginawa ko noon. [I have no regrets.] That made me who I am today.

“Mas matapang, mas independent. [Stronger and more independent.] My family is always there to support me naman.

“They’ve gotten over what I did in the past. They are happy na naging normal na ang buhay ko [that my life is normal] and I’m focusing on my career.”

Independence

Ellen said she’s single and not yet ready to mingle. She broke up recently with her boyfriend of 3 years, Filo Cucueco.

“He joined Survivor Philippines dahil pinilit ko siya [because I prodded him to]. Gano’n niya ako kamahal [That’s how much he loves me].

“Nawala na lang ‘yung init namin sa isa’t isa. Siguro hanggang doon na lang kami talaga.” (The fire was gone. Maybe it’s meant to be.)

“Mas gusto ko ang ganito na walang karelasyon [I prefer having no relationship at this time]. I can do what I want na walang magiging hadlang [with nothing in the way].

“Kung sakaling kami pa ni Filo, hindi siya papayag na gawin ko itong indie film.”

(If Filo and I were still together, he wouldnt’ have consented to my doing this film.)

“I might have passed up the opportunity to do a good film where people will take me seriously as an actress.

“Ayoko munang makipag-date.” (I don’t want to go dating first.)

“I just gained my freedom. I want to enjoy my life as a single woman. And do the things that I want with no one telling me what’s right and what’s wrong.”– Rappler.com
