Angel Locsin to DepEd: Be ‘accountable, correct mistake’

Angel Locsin criticized the Department of Education on Sunday, November 15, for seemingly being “unaffected” by the values a teacher was promoting in a controversial physical education module that referred to the actress as an “obese person.”

“What bothers me most is apart from teaching incorrect grammar to the students, DepEd seems unaffected that the said teacher is teaching bad conduct and sowing discrimination among the children. Anong mangyayare sa future kung ang mga kabataan ay tinuturuan ng pambabastos at pangungutya sa kapwa? (What will happen to the youth’s future if they are taught to be rude and judgmental?)” she said. 

“This is the more relevant issue DepEd, that you should be held accountable and must correct. Sa inyo naka salalay ang pag asa ng ating milyon milyong kabataan (The hope of millions of youth depend on you).”

Angel was reacting to the DepEd’s statement, which seemingly distanced itself from a controversial physical education module used in Occidental Mindoro. The actress also noted that she was going to ignore the issue until she saw the DepEd statement.

The controversial part of the module, which DepEd said was teacher-made, read: “Angel Locsin is an obese person. She, together with Coco Martin eats fatty and sweet food in Mang Inasal fast food restaurant most of the time. In her house, she always watching television (sic) and does not have any physical activities.”

The module then asked students what would happen if Angel will continued her lifestyle.

“The said teacher should apologize to his students and all the students that read the module. I am fortunate that I had teachers who value good manners and right conduct. Every child deserves to have teachers like them,” said Angel.

The incident involving Angel is the latest in a long series controversies related to DepEd’s educational modules. In the past months, citizens have spotted various grammar mistakes and wrong math solutions. Some worksheets also involved scenarios that reinforced gender stereotypes.

Angel trended on social media early this year after users online pointed out that she gained weight and still looked confident and beautiful.

The actress has been busy with her philanthropy work, recently joining several of her fellow artists to call for donations for victims of the typhoons that hit Luzon in the past weeks. – Rappler.com
