OPM icon April Boy Regino dies

OPM icon April Boy Regino, whose hit songs dominated the 90s, died on Sunday, November 29. He was 59.

The sad news was first announced by April Boy’s brother, Vingo Regino, in a Facebook post. Vingo, who was part of the “April Boys,” later said: “‘Di ko mapigilang maiyak ganito pala kapag nawalan ka ng kapatid.” (I can’t stop crying. So this is how it feels to lose a brother.)

The singer’s wife, Madel, later confirmed her husband’s passing on Sunday to ABS-CBN entertainment reporter MJ Felipe.

His son, singer JC Regino, changed his Facebook profile photo to a picture of candle with a photo of an “idol” baseball cap.

April Boy sang “Paano Ang Puso Ko,” “Umiiyak Ang Puso,” and “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,” all of which were hits in the Filipino music scene in the 90s. The singer always wore baseball caps, both in performances and in daily life.

On April 9, April Boy celebrated his 59th birthday in the US, in the company of his immediate family. During their trip to the US, April Boy performed with his brothers for an “April Boys” reunion concert.

They flew back to the Philippines recently.

The singer had been diagnosed with cancer in 2009. In 2015, he said he almost lost his vision due to complications from diabetes.

April Boy is survived by his wife, two children, and a grandchild. – Rappler.com
