Christina Aguilera voiced her support for fellow pop icon Britney Spears, following the latter’s testimony before a Los Angeles court, wherein she detailed her “abusive” conservatorship under her father and how it has left her traumatized and depressed.

Christina took to Twitter on Tuesday, June 29 to support Spears.

“These past few days I’ve been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through. It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish,” she wrote.

To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those “close” to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable. The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly.

While admitting that she did not know all the details about the issue and Britney’s experiences, she wrote that all she could do was to “share from my heart on what I’ve heard, read and seen in the media.”

“The conviction and desperation of this plea for freedom leads me to believe that this person I once knew has been living without compassion or decency from those in control,” Christina added.

To a woman who has worked under conditions and pressure unimaginable to most, I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life.

The thread ended with Christina writing: “I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life. My heart goes out to Britney. She deserves all the TRUE love and support in the world.”

The conservatorship, which is an appointment of a guardian by a judge to manage an incapacitated individual’s financial and daily affairs, was granted to Britney’s father, James, following the singer’s mental health concerns in 2008.

However, the “abusive” conservatorship seemed to cause more suffering in Britney’s life. The singer said she wanted to “sue” her family for taking away her freedom to marry and have a baby. She was also reportedly barred from seeing her friends who lived close by.

Many other Hollywood celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, Halsey, Khloe Kardashian, and Rose McGowan have also spoke out to support Britney, one of the biggest pop stars in the late 90s and early 2000s. – with reports from John Patrick Magno Ranara/Rappler.com
