Veteran director Jose Javier Reyes did not mince words when he criticized a learning module that asked students to identify the actors that delivered famous movie lines.

In a Facebook post on Monday, October 26, Reyes posted a photo of the supposed Filipino 2 module, and said it was “not only dismaying but infuriating.”

“What kind of vision and even professionalism exist among those in charge of education in this country if the teaching of language is based on identifying ‘hugot lines’ and ‘quotable quotes’ from local movies and asking who rendered these dialogue?” he wrote.

“What sort of learning expectations and deliverables are found here … or did whoever made this module think that involving popular culture trivia is an effective way to teach language?”

He went on to say that he was “demoralized by the educational standards being shown to Filipino students,” and questioned how critical thinking can be taught to students when educators themselves “are in dire need of brains and even dedication to their work as well?”

“Thus today I have concocted a new term: “EDIOTS”. Idiots in Education,” he said in his post.

In a later statement to the Inquirer, the Department of Education (DepEd) denied that the learning module was developed by them.

DepEd had previously been criticized for errors found in modules they developed for distance learning this school year. They had asked for the public’s understanding, saying that they are also adjusting to the new education system. – Rappler.com
