Following the announcement that she will be part of ABS-CBN’s Darna series, Iza Calzado looked back at her long journey before finally bagging a role in the project.

“I honestly never thought or dreamt I would be part of this iconic project even as a child growing up, wanting to be an artista,” she began her Instagram post published on Saturday, August 14.

She added, “The journey to this has been 17 years for me with a lot of painful parts that I have come to accept with grace because I know this is part of my journey to becoming my own kind of Darna.”

Iza was considered for the role by GMA Network in the early 2000s but it was eventually offered to her then fellow-Kapuso star Angel Locsin.

ABS-CBN announced Iza’s involvement in the TV series on August 12. She is set to play the first Darna in the series, and the mother of the titular heroine.

In a press release, ABS-CBN said Iza had waited for years to reveal her participation in the project. “There have been changes in the cast and directors and as Direk Lauren [Dyogi] said, I am the constant,” she said.

Iza said she believes it’s destiny. “I almost had the chance in the past, but God had other plans. I was not meant to be that Darna but he surely prepared me to play this Darna. Everything always happens in His perfect time,” she said.

In the Instagram post, Iza said the experience made her “believe in Divine timing” and made her “humbled by God’s plans.”

She also expressed her hope and excitement over being part of the project. “May this upcoming Darna series make us believe in the hero that exists in all of us because imagine the possibilities of coming together once we’ve all tapped into our super powers? What a beautiful world I see,” Iza ended her post.

The Darna TV series is set to begin production in September. The Filipino comic book adaptation was initially supposed to be a feature film, but the movie was postponed indefinitely in August 2020 following a long pause in both TV and movie production because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jane de Leon was announced as the new Darna in 2019, after actress Liza Soberano backed out due to health reasons. The project has also seen two directors take the helm. Jerrold Tarog was set to direct the Darna movie after Erik Matti stepped down from the project.

ABS-CBN finally announced in December 2020 that the project would push through as a TV series. Tarog confirmed in January 2021 that he would not be part of the TV series due to scheduling conflicts. – Rappler.com
