Actress Julia Barretto on Friday, September 25, filed a complaint against former broadcaster Jay Sonza days after the broadcaster falsely claimed she was pregnant.
Julia, 23, filed the complaint before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)'s Cybercrime Division, according to a report from ABS-CBN reporter MJ Felipe.
According to Manila Bulletin, the actress is asking the NBI to investigate the "untrue and irresponsible statements made by Sonza on his social media account."
Speaking to Felipe, Barretto said that in the past, she's let a lot of things pass, particularly on social media. "Binastos ang reputation ko, ang pangalan ko (My reputation, my name's been besmirched). I think I just wanna show people now na hindi ko na pinapalagpas ang mga bagay na ganito (that this time, I won't let these things pass)," she added.
Actress Marjorie Barretto, Julia's mother, said Sonza's claim – which the young actress quickly denied – was harmful towards contracts Julia signed.
"Walang pinanggalingan yung sinasabi po ninyo. Ang pagkakaconfirm pa ninyo eh baboy yung style. Di niyo na nirespeto yung pagkababae niya at saka bata. Nakakasira kayo ng pagtratrabaho ng bata," Marjorie told Felipe, referring to Sonza.
(You have no basis for your post. You confirmed it in such a rude manner. He did not respect her as a woman and a young adult. He's a threat to her work.)
Sonza earlier claimed in a Facebook post that the actress was pregnant with Gerald Anderson's child.
Part of the post by Sonza said: "Congratulations sa aking kapitbahay sa Congressional Village, Bahay Toro, Quezon City.” (Congratulations to my neighbor in Congressional Village, Bahay Toro, Quezo City.)
Julia quickly denied Sonza's claim by posting a photo of herself with the caption: "FAKE NEWS :)."
Sonza acknowledged Julia and Marjorie's denial but did not apologize for spreading the rumor itself. Instead, he wrote: "May umamin kasi kaya nagalak ako (Someone told me so I got excited)."
"Kung ganoon po, binabawi ko ang aking masayang pagbati....Pasensya na kung napaaga ang aking Congratulations (If that's the case, then I take back my well-wishes. I apologize for the early congratulations)."
The younger Barretto is no stranger to controversy and rumor. Back in 2019, she was the target of speculation online after an anonymous person insinuated on social media that Julia was the reason behind Gerald Anderson and actress Bea Alonzo's breakup.
