Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli: A timeline of their love

It’s been a year since Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli got married in a Christian ceremony in Taguig.

What was supposed to be a blissful event was marred by controversy following family drama, which involved a bodyguard accusing the groom of physical harm. The couple has since brushed off the controversy, with Matteo and Sarah enjoying life as husband and wife.

In celebration of their first anniversary as husband and wife, we look back at the love story everyone watched and cheered for.

Meeting in 2009

Sarah was already a popular singer when she met Matteo, who was just starting out in showbiz. Matteo had always expressed his admiration for Sarah as a performer.

Working on projects together, 2011-2013

Sarah and Matteo started to work on a few projects together. Mateo joined Sarah in the movie Catch Me… I’m In Love with Gerald Anderson. He also was one of her guests in the US concert tours.

Going public in 2014

In June 2014, Sarah confirmed that they had been dating for a year. Matteo admitted in an interview that his endearment for Sarah was “mahal” after the late director Wenn Deramas posted about it on Facebook.

“Bilang mag-26 na ako, parang na-realize ko lang sa sarili ko, it’s time to decide na maging normal. Maging normal na tao. Maging normal na babae. Maging normal sa emosyon ko,” she said.

(Since I’m 26, I realized it’s time to be normal. To be a normal person. To be a normal girl. To have normal emotions.)

Prior to confirming their relationship, the two had been spotted several times together, including during a night out with Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo.

In an interview, Sarah, who rarely talks about her personal life, said of the relationship: “Parang kahit nagkarelasyon ako in the past, ito yung talagang legit, talagang nahahawakan ko, nayayakap ko. So, I’m hoping na sana siya na ang huli.”

(I’ve had relationships in the past but this one feels legit. I can feel it, I can hug it. I’m hoping he’s the one.)

Matteo supports Sarah following a public emotional breakdown in 2018

During a tour in the US, Sarah suddenly got emotional and talked about feeling empty, just as she was about to perform her hit song “Forever is Not Enough.” She composed herself and went back on stage to perform – but the video went viral, prompting many fans to worry about Sarah.

Matteo later posted a message on his Instagram saying: “Keep walking, I’ll always be beside you. No matter what. I love you, my love. And I miss you.”

Over the years, Matteo has walked the red carpet of the ABS-CBN/Star Magic Ball solo. That changed in 2018, when he and Sarah walked together for the first time.

In November, Matteo shared a photo of himself and Sarah goofing off as she showed off a sparkling ring. After 6 years together, they were finally set to marry.

Matteo would later write another post thanking his parents for welcoming Sarah. He also hoped for the day when Sarah’s parents would join them during dinners and events.

February 2020: The low-key but controversial wedding

On February 20, the couple got married in Taguig City.

The wedding would later turn controversial after Sarah’s mom Divine reportedly showed up unexpectedly and made a scene. A bodyguard also accused Matteo of punching him, which the actor denied.

The issue between Matteo and the bodyguard Jerry Tamara has since been fixed. Matteo would later share a photo of himself and his wife, finally confirming the rumors.

Since tying the knot, the two have been enjoying their married life. Matteo post photos every now and then of themselves going on vacation or doing chores together.
