MANILA, Pilippines – A new batch of films competing in annual independent film festival Cinemalaya were announced on March 11.
According to the release, themes of this year's finalists are diverse and cover several genres. Comedy and action as well as coming of age stories and romance tales are only some viewers can expect from this year's festival happening on August 1 to 10 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Greenbelt 3, Trinoma and Alabang Town Center.
The all-digital film festival aims to "discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers."
The festival divides entries into the New Breed Category, the Directors Showcase, and the Short Film Category. Films in the New Breed Category, the festival's main competition category, are for for first time filmmakers who have note made any commercialy released films. In contrast, the Directors showcase features works from filmmakers who have created commercialy released films.
Last year's big winners were Hannah Espia's Transit for the New Breed Category and Jerrold Tarog's Sana Dati for the Director's Showcase. Both films were awarded Best Film and Best Director, among other awards in their respective categories.
