[WATCH] Rappler Live Jam: ‘Himala: Isang Musikal’ cast
MANILA, Philippines – The cast of Himala: Isang Musikal are performing on Rappler Live Jam.
Staged by The Sandbox Collective and 9 Works Theatrical, the play is based on the iconic 1982 film Himala, written by Ricky Lee and directed by Ishmael Bernal.
Adapted for the stage by Ricky himself, with music by Vincent de Jesus, the play tells the story of Elsa, a young girl from the small town of Cupang who, after reporting an apparition, becomes a faith healer and is hailed by the townspeople as a savior who can put an end to their suffering.
The play was first staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines by Tanghalang Pilipino in 2003, and was later revived in 2018, this time directed by Ed Lacson Jr on a more intimate stage. Under Ed’s direction, the film-turned-play takes on a new life, with a stage that allows the audience to immerse fully in the story.
The Sandbox Collective and 9 Work Theatrical’s production of Himala: Isang Musikal has been brought back for a second run, and is currently playing at the Power Mac Center Spotlight theater in Makati.
For this second run, Aicelle Santos returns to her role as Elsa. She is joined by Kakki Teodoro, who plays Elsa’s childhood friend Nimia, and Neomi Gonzales who plays Elsa’s friend-turned-disciple, Chayong.
Also in the cast are May Bayot-De Castro, David Ezra, Vic Robinson, and Sandino Martin.
Himala: Isang Musikal will run until October 20. In between shows, catch Aicelle, Kakki, David, and Sandino as they sing songs from the musical and talk about what it’s like to bring the timeless story of Cupang to life. Bookmark this page or head over to fb.com/rapplerdotcom. – Rappler.com
