What ‘Batman v Superman’ stars think of the bad movie reviews

MANILA, Philippines – In spite of how the hype has built up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to be, critics have not been equally generous. Its Rotten Tomatoes rating is a disappointing 30%, based on the critical reviews it has aggregated. (READ: Movie reviews: What critics think of ‘Batman v Superman’)

This doesn’t mean that the stars and the people behind the film have thrown in the towel. In interviews, they addressed the mixed responses to Batman v Superman.

Superman/Clark Kent actor Henry Cavill, speaking to Yahoo! Movies, gave primacy to how fans can get behind the film. “What is really going to matter, I believe, is what the audience says,” Henry said.

“Because they’re the ones who are buying tickets, they’re the ones who want to see more of this kind of story or not and so the audience’s voice is loudest and after this weekend the audience, at least partly, will have spoken.”

Henry also told Yahoo! Movies, “The interesting thing is that we get the critics who have their personal opinions. And the thing about personal opinions is that they always come from a place. And there’s a preconceived idea which you have to get past a critic before you start writing your article or your review, and that affects everything.”

As Henry finishes explaining his side, Ben Affleck, who plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, just agrees. But in The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he articulates his side.

“This is definitely the kind of movie to see with a big event, huge crowd to see it. It’s a lot of fun. It’s like a big, exciting, fun, explosive movie,” he described the film.

While Jimmy skirted around the bad reviews, quoting the glowing ones, Ben said, “Don’t scare people into thinking this is a critical film. We’re not going for the critics’ circle. This is an audience movie. People actually like this movie.”

A humorous take on Ben Affleck’s Yahoo! Movies interview had also emerged and gone viral. Called “Sad Affleck,” a video highlighted the actor’s blank facial expression as Henry spoke – hilariously set to “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel.

Amy Adams, who plays Clark Kent’s love interest Lois Lane, also echoes the two lead actors’ sentiments.

She told Yahoo! Movies, “I know that [director] Zack [Snyder] doesn’t make the movies – and none of us are making the movies – for the critics. So to speak, you can’t go into it with that perspective. I know we really hope the fans like it, and so far the reaction has been really positive on that front.”

Amy also agreed that people will still see it regardless of the critics who disparaged it. She said, “If you’re interested in a film you should see it and form your own opinion rather than just going on the word of somebody.”

Wonder Woman/Diana Prince actress Gal Gadot weighed in on the film herself.

“I think the movie’s great. I think this movie is huge. It’s massive,” she said. “I think that Zack did a fantastic job of bringing Superman’s world and Batman’s world into one movie, and setting the ground for so many more characters to come in the future in such an interesting way.”

“So yes, there’s a lot in this movie,” Gal added, seeming to echo comments such as those of The Guardian‘s Andrew Pulver, who said, “It’s a lot of ground to cover, making the resulting film feel both overstuffed and abnormally extended.”

She followed up, saying, “But I think that he nailed it and I really enjoyed it.”

Jesse Eisenberg, who did what some critics branded as a The Social Network-esque (where he played Mark Zuckerberg) take on Lex Luthor, said that he doesn’t even watch the films he’s in.

“I can’t read stuff ’cause I don’t even watch the movies,” he said. “I don’t like reading stuff either. I just find it distracting or unnerving.”

When Yahoo! Movies‘s Tom Butler pointed out that some critics praised his performance, Jesse answered, “Okay, then I guess I’ll read everything and look forward to seeing the film.”

As critics highlighted his visual effects-heavy approach, Zack Snyder explained his take on the Superman and Batman mythology. He said, “I’m a comic book guy and I made the movie based as much as I could on that aesthetic. And so I don’t know how else to do it 100%, so it is what it is.”

It appears that these stars’ words have been vindicated as its opening day box office sales has been reported to surpass that of Avengers: Age of Ultron, with $27.7 million as compared to the latter’s $27.6 million in May 2016.
