Morissette sings 'A Whole New World' upon the request of Will Smith

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino singer Morissette Amon got the biggest surprise of her life when she met Aladdin composer Alan Menken and actor Will Smith during a trip to Tokyo.

In a video posted by Disney Philippines on its social media accounts on Sunday, June 2, Morissette is ushered into a room and sees the “A Whole New World” composer playing the piano as Will, who plays Genie in the live action remake of the movie, listened. She then introduced herself to the two.

“Lea told me about you,” the famous composer said, referring to Lea Salonga, the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in the 1992 movie.

Morissette then asked Alan how it felt to be working on the movie again, and he said he was happy to be doing it again. “It’s wonderful, you know, it’s kinda more contemporary.”

Will then asked Morissette as if she could perform for him and Alan.

“I know I’m supposed to be the Genie, but, you know, can the Genie have a wish? Because when you have the master and the lovely voice of Morissette here, I mean, I would like to make the wish that I hear the two of you,” he said.

Morisette obliged, and performed a few bars of the song.

Clearly, both Alan and Will were impressed by her voice, with Alan saying she hit the high notes.

Morisette was picked to sing “A Whole New World” with fellow Filpino singer Darren Espanto as part of the promotions of the movie in the Philippines.

Darren was supposed to be part of the Japan trip but was unable to come due to a prior commitment.  — Rappler.com
