Thailand’s highest-grossing film to show in PH
MANILA, Philippines - After a successful screening in the United States and here in Asia, the Thai film “Pee Mak Phra Khanong,” will have its Philippine premiere on Wednesday, August 28.
Director Banjong Pisanthanakun’s horror/romantic comedy stars German-Thai model-actor Mario Maurer and rising star Davika Hoorne.
The film is distributed by Star Cinema, the ABS-CBN film company for which Maurer did last year's rom-com "Suddenly It's Magic" with Erich Gonzales.
Maurer, who was here early this month for a fashion endorsement and fan-con (fan conference), once again diversifies his acting portfolio — perhaps in the spirit of his striking film debut in the gay love story, "The Love of Siam (2007)."
"Pee Mak," is a hybrid film, a period rom-com merged with horror.
Maurer plays the title character, a villager drafted to military service while his beautiful wife, Mae Nak (Davika Hoorne), delivers a baby boy.
In the frontlines, Pee Mak meets 4 other soldiers who become his closest friends.
After the war, he invites them to his village, Phra Khanong, in Bangkok, little knowing that his wife and son have died if not exactly having already departed to the afterlife.
It's a story with tragic elements yet this production amazingly pulls it off as comedy. Released in Thailand early this year, "Pee Mak" immediately became the second highest-grossing film of all time, as of this reporting by "The Hollywood Reporter." Soon enough, the film outperformed that record. - Rappler.com
'Pee Mak' opens in cinemas on August 28.
