Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire not confirmed for ‘Spider-Man 3’

Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire not confirmed for ‘Spider-Man 3’
A Sony Pictures representative clarifies that the rumored castings that went viral online are 'unconfirmed'

With the internet buzzing with rumors that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were joining the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland, the movie studio clarified that these rumors, as of the moment, were not true (unfortunately).

A Sony Pictures representative revealed to Entertainment Tonight Canada via a statement that “those rumored castings are not confirmed.”

Although this is not an outright denial of the castings, it does indicate that nothing has been set in stone.

Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker/Spider-Man from 2002-2007 in a trilogy directed by Sam Raimi. Garfield took over the role in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. Since 2016, Holland has been the onscreen face of the character, who was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War.

The rumors came on the heels of Jamie Foxx’s casting as Electro in the upcoming 2021 Spider-Man movie. Foxx previously portrayed the character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, fueling speculation that previous adaptations are being introduced through the “multiverse.”

In the world of comic books, the “multiverse” concept deals with parallel Earths or realities, where alternate versions exist. The multiverse is a trope in superhero comics, as both DC and Marvel have their own versions of the concept.

In live action, The CW’s DC Comics series have incorporated the multiverse into several of their storylines. Introducing the concept to the Marvel Cinematic Universe might allow previous versions of characters to exist alongside current ones.

The currently untitled Spider-Man movie is the 3rd in a series of films featuring Holland, after Spider-Man: Homecoming (2016) and Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019). Principal photography is set to commence this month in New York, after production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, and Jacob Batalon are set to reprise their roles from previous films, while Benedict Cumberbatch is set to make an appearance as Doctor Strange. The film is set for a December 17, 2021 release date. – with reports from Jericho Igdanes/Rappler.com
