An animated feature film based on the horror-fantasy comic book Ella Arcangel is in the works.

Mervin Malonzo, author and artist of the TABI PO comics, confirmed the news on Twitter. “Ikinagagalak kong sabihin na magkakaroon ng pelikula na base sa ‘Ella Arcangel: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko’ sa tulong ng grant na binigay ng Film Development Council of the Philippines,” he said.

(It is my pleasure to announce that Ella Arcangel: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko is getting a movie adaptation through a grant from the Film Development Council of the Philippines.)

The Ella Arcangel official Facebook page also posted the announcement along with an 18-second sneak peek. “Abangan si Ella, si Mimiw, at si Pangil,” read the post. (Watch out for Ella, Mimiw, and Pangil!)

Based on the comic book series by Julius Villanueva, Ella Arcangel follows a young mambabarang (sorcerer) who struggles against the dangers in Barangay Masikap. In Ella Arcangel: Awit ng Pangil at Kuko, the second book in the series, it is up to Ella to save residents and the cats from a threat against them.

Published by Haliya Publishing in August 2017, the Ella Arcangel series covers local myths and Philippine folklore. It also touches on topics such as abuse in the hands of police and abusive husbands.

A 19-minute animated version of Ella Arcangel: Oyayi sa Dilim was released in May 2020 via Malonzo’s YouTube account. On its official website, Malonzo said it took him “two to three years to complete” the animation.
