MANILA, Philippines - "Ekstra: The Bit Player" will have its world premiere at the 38th Toronto International Film Festival on September 5.
The independent film will be part of the Contemporary World Cinema program of the 10-day festival.
"Ekstra" took home 5 awards at the recent Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, including Best Actress for Vilma Santos, who marks this film as her first indie.
Jeffrey Jeturian is happy that his film is getting invited to different festivals abroad.
"'“Ekstra was invited to the Tokyo festival," said the critically acclaimed indie-film director.
"Nito lang nag-confirm na gusto nilang kunin for competition. [They just confirmed that they wanted the film in competition.] Eh, ang Tokyo [has a] best actress award. The same with the Chicago Film Festival, invited din ang 'Ekstra.'
"Ang problema nakasagot na kami sa Toronto. Ang gusto ng mga festivals sa kanila mag-international premiere." (The problem is we already confirmed with Toronto. The festivals want to do international premieres.)
"So, instead of competition, [they'll just put 'Ekstra' in the] World Cinema section."
Direk Jeffrey says working with Vilma was a dream finally fulfilled.
Is working with Superstar Nora Aunor up next?
"Why not? Kahit sino naman ay willing kong makatrabaho." (I'm willing to work with anybody.)
In the spirit of his own film, "Ekstra," Jeturian takes pride in everybody, he says, he's worked with — Dina Bonnevie, Angel Aquino, Cherry Pie Picache, Ina Raymundo, Ana Capri, Klaudia Koronel, Francine Prieto, Jaclyn Jose, and the late Nida Blanca, to name some.
Add to that the cast and crew of Jeturian's current hit serye, "Be Careful with My Heart."
"Okey na okey sa akin na gumawa ng film with Nora kung may material ako na makikita for her. (To do a film with Nora would be really okay with me if there's material I can find for her.)
"Kaya exciting ang awards season next year because of the performances of Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor, and Lorna Tolentino," Direk Jeffrey said.
"Pahulaan kung sino ang mag-uuwi ng maraming [It's a wild guess who'll take home the most] best actress awards." - Rappler.com
