Fan Girl may have been the big winner at the Metro Manila Film Festival, but it was also apparently the entry most affected by piracy – something that director Antoinette Jadaone is already dealing with, along with MMFF organizers and streaming partner Upstream.
At a blogger’s conference on December 28, Antoinette reminded people that there will be consequences not only for film pirates, but for those who supported pirated versions of the film.
“Hindi lang Fan Girl ang nag-uuusap, all the producers of the films included in MMFF. Kasi Fan Girl ‘yung pinaka-apekatado pero halos lahat apektado ng piracy. We have been talking with Upstream and Metro Manila Film Festival and this week they will be very busy with filing of whatever,” she said, saying that they will be meeting again to streamline the process.
(All the producers of other films in the MMFF, not just Fan Girl, are talking. Fan Girl is the most affected but almost all are affected by piracy.)
“Definitely there will be very real consequences for pirates and those who support pirated links,” she added.
Links to Fan Girl previously made the rounds on social media as a partially nude scene featuring star Paulo Avelino trended online.
In a Facebook post on December 25, production company Black Sheep shared a graphic featuring a blurred version of the scene, while urging the audience to watch the film legitimately.
“It looks better in full HD,” the graphic read. “Do yourself a favor and see every little (and big) detail not only in Fan Girl but for all the films in the MMFF.”
The caption reminded audiences that piracy is a crime, and that the “MMFF and Upstream are tripling their efforts to catch pirates.”
“You may end up in jail. We are watching,” it said.
Fan Girl, a film about a teenage girl’s obsession with a film actor, recently dominated the awards night at the MMFF, taking the awards for Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture. – Rappler.com
