The third installment in the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise will focus on Professor Albus Dumbledore's fight against Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald

Warner Bros. has confirmed the title and release date of the third Fantastic Beasts film – Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which is now set for an April 15, 2022 theatrical release.

The studio announced the news on Wednesday, September 22 on their social media accounts. The third installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise was previously slated for a July 2022 release.

According to Variety, the upcoming film’s plot will tell the story of Professor Albus Dumbledore, who knows that the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world.

“Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches, and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers,” the synopsis reads.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will star Jude Law as Dumbledore, Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, and Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald. Grindelwald was played by Johnny Depp in the first two movies, but the actor agreed to resign from his role in November 2020 following the controversy surrounding the UK court ruling that claimed he was violent towards ex-wife Amber Heard.

The cast also includes Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, William Nadylam, and Katherine Waterston.

The film is directed by original director David Yates, written by Steve Kloves and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, and produced by Rowling, Kloves, Lionel Wigram, and Tim Lewis. It is based on a screenplay written by Rowling.

The Secrets of Dumbledore succeeds Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) and The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018). Warner Bros. said that two more films are being planned to complete the five-film prequel series.

The previous Fantastic Beasts films have amassed over $1.4 billion globally. – Rappler.com
