Plans to end the Fast & Furious saga with an untitled 11th film have been revealed ahead of the cinematic release of F9.
According to a Variety report, Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin is set to return as director for the two final films of the saga. Lin is known for directing 5 films in the franchise: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, and F9.
F9 was scheduled to be released in 2020, but its premiere was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has also delayed the premiere of the 10th film, which was originally intended to be released next year.
Ride or die, remember?
Being around for nearly 20 years, the Fast & Furious franchise has amassed many fans who have grown up with its stories and characters. People are drawn to it not only for the fast cars and impossible heists but also the familial relationship in Dominic Toretto’s gang.
The franchise has boasted a diverse cast since 2001, long before calls for racial representation in Hollywood films. Fast & Furious is also known for opening its doors to directors who are people of color. Justin Lin is Taiwanese-American.
Even after the heist saga comes to a close, it will remain a testament to the success and talent of people of color.
We’ll see it again
The end of the Fast & Furious franchise is not the end of its cinematic universe. Fans can still count on the release of spin-off films featuring the characters in the original saga.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was released in 2019, and a sequel is set to be released in the future. Additionally, Vin Diesel (who plays Dominic Toretto) has committed to producing an untitled female-led film in the Fast & Furious cinematic universe. – with reports from Wyanet Alcibar/Rappler.com
