Lingua Franca, a love story about an undocumented Filipina trans caretaker in Brooklyn, has been nominated for the John Cassavetes Award in the 2021 Spirit Awards.
The award is given to films with a budget of less than $500,000.
Cebu-born Filipino Isabel Sandoval wrote, directed, and starred in Lingua Franca, which premiered in the Philippines online late 2020. The film has reaped several awards since its worldwide release, including Best Actress for Isabel and a jury award.
“Gobsmacked to be in the running for the JOHN CASSAVETES AWARD!!!” said Isabel.
The movie is available on Netflix, save for the Philippines. It streamed in the Philippines for a period of time via Cinema ’76.
Nominated alongside Lingua Franca are The Killing of Two Lovers, La Leyenda Negra, Residue, and Saint Frances.
