Furiosa, the prequel film to the 2015 hit Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, is set to begin filming in Australia.
The prequel will follow the character Imperator Furiosa, played in the previous film by Charlize Theron. Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her role in The Queen’s Gambit, will play the younger Furiosa in the movie. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II complete the cast.
No additional details about the plot has been released, but director George Miller is set to work with longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell. The prequel is set to debut in theaters in 2023.
In a press conference with Hemsworth and director Miller, New South Wales state premier Gladys Berejiklian said that Furiosa is expected to become “the biggest ever film to be made in Australia.” The project is said to support more than 850 local jobs and bring in $350 million to the country’s economy.
Hemsworth also shared how happy he is to be part of the spin-off project. “Can’t wait to kick it off. Gonna pour my heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into this one,” he said.
