The upcoming action-fantasy film based on the hit video game franchise is set for a 2021 Philippine cinema release

New Line Cinema has released the first official trailer for the action fantasy film Mortal Kombat, based on the hit fighting video game franchise of the same name, currently on its 11th installment.

The film is directed by Australian filmmaker Simon McQuoid, and will have executive producers James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman), Todd Gardner, and E. Bennett Walsh (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) on board.

The screenplay was written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984), which was adapted from Mortal Kombat: Rebirth by Oren Uziel.

Mortal Kombat’s first trailer introduces MMA fighter Cole Young, who is being hunted by warrior and cryomancer Sub-Zero, as instructed by Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung. To protect himself and his family, Cole seeks the help of Sonya Blade and Jax, a Special Forces Major with the same mysterious dragon tattoo as Cole.

The movie is based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, which first launched in 1992.
