Filipino Pixar director to helm Rebelde online filmmaking class
Ronnie del Carmen is best known for working on the films 'Up' and 'Inside Out'

[Editor’s note: On October 17, Saturday, 2 – 4 pm, Rebelde will be holding a online filmmaking class with Pixar director Ronnie del Carmen. Below is their press release.]

“Rebelde Class” has built a reputation as a filmmaking workshop organized by Rebelde, a community of aspiring filmmakers.

Now on its 14th run, and given the world’s current state, Rebelde takes on new ways to continue its advocacies towards the filmmaking community. This year, Rebelde is going online with exclusive panel discussions.

For the first time, Rebelde has invited Academy Award nominee Ronnie del Carmen for a filmmaking talk this October 17, Saturday, 2 – 4 pm. This online event will be hosted by Pamela Reyes (Producer of Birdshot) and Mikoy Morales (actor, musician).

A Pinoy at Pixar

Ronnie del Carmen is a Filipino animation writer, story artist, story supervisor, and production designer.

He co-directed and was one of the story writers for the 2015 Pixar film Inside Out, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He was also the story supervisor on Pixar’s tenth full-length computer-animated film, Up, and the director of its accompanying short film, Dug’s Special Mission.

The Rebelde community

Rebelde is a diverse community of aspiring filmmakers from different parts of the country. It was founded by J.E. Tiglao, a young, independent filmmaker based in the Philippines.

Together with his comrades, they have made films that have been featured in Cinemalaya, Gawad Urian, and other film festivals abroad.

Last year, they made their first feature film, Metamorphosis. It was the first Filipino intersex-centric film. It also bagged the most awards at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival, where it was an entry.

Rebelde has also created events like the Rebelde Film Camp – a unique jamboree of filmmakers, usually held out of town, in which delegates learned filmmaking and celebrated the magic of cinema.

It has gathered more than five hundred filmmakers and film-lovers alike to learn from mentors such as the legendary Ricky Lee and National Artist for films Kidlat Tahimik, to name a few.

Aside from film camps, Rebelde also held classes to offer more immersive and more accessible film education to everyone.
