Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first official trailer for upcoming horror thriller film, Malignant, directed by filmmaker James Wan.

Malignant follows a woman whose dreams are plagued by shocking visions of grisly murders. When she discovers that she is seeing the murders as they are happening in real life, she attempts to find out the truth to these unsettling events, only to be confronted by a vicious entity named Gabriel, who is believed to be “the devil.”

The film stars Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Maddie Hasson (Impulse), George Young (Containment), Michole Briana White (Black Mafia Family, Dead to Me), Jacqueline McKenzie (Palm Beach, Reckoning), Jake Abel (Percy Jackson films) and Ingrid Bisu (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun).

Malignant will be helmed by Wan, who is most known for being the architect behind The Conjuring universe, as well as being the director of several popular horror films such as Saw, Dead Silence, and Insidious.

Malignant marks the return of Wan to making horror films since directing the 2016 film The Conjuring 2.  Outside of horror, Wan also directed 2015’s Furious 7 and 2018’s Aquaman.

In an interview with IGN, Wan said that the film is a mishmash of several genres. “It’s horror, but it’s also a traditional thriller. It’s psychological, it’s serial killer, but it’s also potentially a monster movie,” he said.

Alongside New Line Cinema and other production companies, the film will be produced by Atomic Monster Productions, a company that was founded by Wan in 2014.

Malignant is set to premiere in US theaters on September 10. It will also be available to watch on streaming service HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release. – with reports from John Patrick Magno Ranara/Rappler.com
