MTRCB meets with ‘Ang Probinsyano’ producers over ‘sexually suggestive’ scene
MTRCB calls on the execs of 'Ang Probinsyano' after receiving a viewer complaint about a scene with Coco Martin and Vice Ganda's characters

MANILA, Philippines – After receiving a complaint from a viewer, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) summoned the producers, writers, and directors of Ang Probinsyano to meet regarding a scene with “sexually suggestive” themes.

In the confirmation letter dated August 2, MTRCB Chairperson Eugenio Villareal acknowledged the presence of the director and producers of the show during the developmental conference.

“During the conference, it surfaced that the sequence of shots coupled with language employed in the said episode may potentially impact on certain sensitivities. In this connection, we note your twin manifestation that (a) you had no intention to offend anyone in regard to the subject scene, and (b) be that as it may, you believe that there is room for improvement for the program as regards sensitivity to particular types of audience, for instance, the young and women,” Villareal said.

Villareal also said that they took note of the show’s “self-regulatory resolution” to fight objectification and depict scenes instead where the “dignity of the human person is upheld.”

In the summons dated July 29, Villareal said that they received a complaint via Facebook Messenger about the show’s July 25 episode. A copy of the MTRCB’s letter was sent to Rappler by a viewer who complained about the episode.

In the episode, Vice Ganda, who playes Ella, and Coco Martin, who plays Cardo, allegedly used “words with double meaning” in a scene involving a flat tire. Ella has a hard time changing a flat tire in the rain, when Cardo pulls over to help out.

In an episode description on the show’s website, it explains that Ella is the leader of an group of scammers who lure people in order to steal money.

“Consistent with our policy of feedback and collaboration, as well as our promotion of the twin norms of self-regulation and audience sensitivity, we thus invite your program… to a dialogue with the Office of the Chairperson,” the letter read.

The MTRCB also noted that although the episode showed an apt SPG (Strong Parental Guidance) rating. “This happened despite the presence of what may be considered ‘sexually suggestive’ shots in the subject depiction,” they wrote.

Ang Probinsyano is a series aired on ABS-CBN starring Coco Martin and Maja Salvador. It’s based on the 1997 Fernando Poe Jr movie of the same name. – Rappler.com
