MANILA, Philippines – Ely Buendia and the Itchyworms were up bright and early – 6 am to be exact – on Sunday, July 24, to shoot the music video for their first song together, “Pariwara,” in Cubao X.
It’s a collaboration that’s been a long time coming for the two, who have expressed admiration for each other before.

During a break at the shoot for their music video, Ely told Rappler that they’ve always wanted to work on something together. Before lunch, we also caught Ely shooting some of his scenes for the video.
“Parang 3 years ko siyang [Ely] kinulit for this eh (I think I’ve been bugging him about about this for 3 years),” joked Itchyworms singer Jugs Jugueta later. “Sulit, sulit naman [yung 3 years] (It was worth it, the 3 years were worth it).”
“Pariwara,” Ely said, is a song for the youth – for the millennials, he added laughing.
“It could be about the millennials, kasi feeling ko parang (because I feel like) they’ve been getting a lot of flak lately, so it’s like giving them something or saying something positive to them naman (for a change). Na parang (That), it’s just part of growing up, the challenges that you’re facing now. The old people now, such as us, have also gone through those challenges,” he said.
Ely also said the message was something he needed to hear when he was younger: “I wished that someone would tell me something like that, or say those words to me, as a form of encouragement. ‘Cause it’s really hard to be young, for any generation, I think.”
“Pariwara” started out as a verse and a chorus by Ely. “I think the ‘Worms did a great job, they immediately latched onto the concept, tapos (and then) it was seamless,” said Ely.
“You will… not notice who wrote what, unless you realize nga na si Jugs yung kumakanta ng parts nila (unless you realize that it’s Jugs singing their parts), at ako yung kumakanta ng parts ko (and I’m the one singing mine). But otherwise, it’s a seamless collaboration.”
It’s always been a dream for The Itchyworms to work with Ely. On Ely’s part, everyone at the table good-naturedly joked that the collaboration was no big deal.
“Well, [it was not a dream] for me, but them…” said Ely.
“Si Ely ”K lang,’ eh (For Ely, it was just okay),” agreed guitarist Chino Singson.
“Nakulitan lang ako sa kanila (They just kept bugging me about it).”
On a more serious note, Jugs said on working with Ely, “I thought it would be more intimidating, but he made us feel quite at home, actually.”
He added, “Literally, because it was his home. We practiced at his home, so we felt right at home!”
The “Pariwara” music video was directed by Maui Mauricio, who worked with the band before, editing their video for “Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal.”
