WATCH: Björk’s new music video is an alien-esque fantasy
The Icelandic artists serves up her signature brand of high fashion strangeness in her video for 'The Gate'

MANILA, Philippines – Björk, queen mother of the wonderfully weird, recently released a new music video, and it’s as inexplicable and visually stunning as you’d expect.

The video is for her song “The Gate,” which the Icelandic singer describes as “essentially a love song, but I say ‘love’ in a more transcendent way.”

The video’s director Andrew Thomas Huang “envisions a kaleidoscopic world inhabited by the singer-songwriter,” who in it wears a stunning piece designed by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele.

The video starts off with our alien queen Björk playing the flute on top of a grassy hill against a pale orange sky. Purple creatures surround her, floating about. The entire thing looks like it could be a live-action version of a Hayao Miyazaki film.

The almost 7-minute long video goes on to show Bjork, this time dressed like a kaleidoscope snowflake fairy, throwing an energy ball to a crystal skeleton across the room. If that doesn’t make any sense remember, this is Björk, so it’s not really supposed to – until it does.

This isn’t the first time that Björk and Andrew made magic together. He also directed the video for Björk’s “Black Lake” off her album Vulnicura. The 10-minute film, commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, is darker and starker compared to “The Gate,” showing Björk singing on her knees inside caves and in the middle of craggy rocks.

The director and singer also collaborated on the video for “Stonemilker,” also from Vulnicura. The video, which features Björk in a neon dress singing against a dramatic sea backdrop, looks simple enough – except that it’s a 360-degree virtual reality experience.
