MANILA, Philippines – It takes two to tango, and Nino Regalado and Adrienne Buenaventura are taking the stage. Buenaventura’s moving lyrics and Regalado’s talent for melody-making are a match made in heaven.

“Sometimes That Happens” was written in August 2012, months before Buenaventura had a miscarriage. The song’s lyrics resonate with her experience of trying to move on with life despite the deadening pain of loss.

Having their song among the Philpop 2013 top 12 is a chance for rebirth, says Buenaventura.

“Sometimes That Happens” is performed by Ace Libre of Never The Strangers.

Video transcript:

Nino:

Nalaman ko na magaling siya mag-write ng poems and lyrics, tapos sabi ko, “Tamang-tama, baka pwede kong hiramin yung lyrics mo, tignan ko kung anong magagawa ko.”

Adrienne:

Ako, I’ve worked with a couple of other songwriters, pero ‘yung amin kasi, parang kinakasal ‘yung lyrics and ‘yung melody, and I appreciate that.

I wrote the lyrics to “Sometimes That Happens” in August 2012. October I found out I was pregnant; two months later, the baby lost the heartbeat, so I was devastated. Pero the Philpop thing kind of sprouted, so I called Nino and said, “Nino, is it okay that we submit this song?”

Nino:

‘Yung lyrics eksakto na dun sa experience niya eh.

Adrienne:

The title kind of fit the circumstance. The singer alam niya na sigurado na sya dito sa isang taong ito.  Something happened along the way na hindi natuloy, pero there’s a line there: sometimes that happens. Kahit na ganoon kasakit, it kind of resonated with what I felt.

Nino and Adrienne:

(Singing) Sometimes that happens, sometimes love just has to end, crystal dreams shatter, wish we could make amends (Singing stops)

Nino:

Gusto kong manalo sa Philpop, pero ngayon palang feeling ko winner na ‘ko kasi nga andami-daming pinagpiliang songs, tapos pasok ‘yung song namin.

Adrienne:

If my pregnancy had continued, I would have given birth in July, so it’s like giving birth to another baby.

Nino and Adrienne:

(Singing) I’m not the prince, I know you’re not my princess, sometimes that happens, can we just stay as friends. (Singing stops)
