LONDON, UK – Philip Chevron, guitarist of pioneering Celtic punk band the Pogues, died of cancer on Tuesday, October 8, at the age of 56, the group announced on their website.

“After a long illness Philip passed away peacefully this morning,” said the message. “We all send our sincere condolences to his family.”

Chevron was treated for head and neck cancer in 2007, but a new inoperable tumor appeared in August 2012.

The Pogues are a critically acclaimed ensemble in modern Irish music and a vital presence in this proud, distinct milieu, along with Van Morrison, U2, Sinead O’Connor, and other artists.

Steeped in tradition and in the raucous spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, the band is also widely noted for its committed, politically charged themes.

Among the band’s best-known songs are “Fairytale of New York” in 1984 and “Thousands Are Sailing.”

Dublin-born Chevron formed the punk band The Radiators from Space in 1976 before joining the Pogues. He went on to complement main songwriter Shane McGowan. – Rappler.com
