The group performs in Manila for the second time

MANILA, Philippines –  If you were looking to catch a concert by some extremely talented young musicians, then the Metro Tent in Pasig was the place to be on Saturday night, September 5.

Against the Current’s 3 core members may not yet be household names, unless of course, you’re under 25 and pay close attention to YouTube. (READ: Against the Current is coming to Manila)

Chrissy Costanza takes on lead vocals with confidence and a stage presence that would put the Energizer Bunny to shame. With unrelenting vocal power, she was constantly on the move, never a dull moment, keeping the crowd interested, alert and thoroughly entertained. Dan Gow on guitar and Will Ferri on drums competently round out the core group, along with two touring members on bass and guitar.

What stood out for me was not just how excited the crowd was, which is typical with today’s young avid fans, but it was how much actual fun the band themselves were having, enjoying it as much as the crowd, if not more, well done!

Although the band began their career gaining attention on the Internet with popular covers, last night’s setlist only included one, “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson. They’ve now begun to create a catalog of their own material, and they’re expecting to release their first full length album by the end of the year.

The band may be best described as pop rock, their songs are catchy, containing youthful lyrics, performed with emotion and a twist of flavor. For those who are curious, according the the band, their moniker is derived from the last line of the book, The Great Gatsby. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

I also asked them a slightly offbeat question. Is there a song that you didn’t write but you would love to claim as your own?

Their answers provide insight to their tastes, which appear to be fully intact. Good answers here:

Chrissy – “Anyway You Want It” – Journey

Will – “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Queen

Dan – “With or Without You” – U2

Whether you choose to go with or against the current, keep and eye out these young talents, now forerunners on how bands develop and market themselves in today’s day and age of digital music.

Big thanks going out to Phoenix Productions and DMC Philippines – a well executed show, as usual.  – Rappler.com
