MANILA, Philippines – From the very first row in front to the very last row in the upper balconies, it was all about the fans at the concert featuring Alex Goot and Against the Current on Saturday, August 30.

The space filled up early, with many chanting the stars’ names long before they hit the stage.

Start it up

Front acts have the difficult job of holding the waiting audience’s attention while the featured acts get ready, but Monique Lualhati had the crowd cheering with covers of hits like Jessie J’s “Who You Are” and Beyonce’s “Love On Top”

The crowd knew the words to almost all the songs – covers or original – singing along with Against the Current’s (ATC) high energy set and later, with Alex’s soulful piano-infused one.

ATC singer Chrissy Costanza had smaller groups of the audience members rushing to her as she bent to touch hands with lucky fans.

The group took special care to wave to to the fans in the upper balconies, thanking them for making it to their first Manila show.

Through performances of their hits “Closer, Faster,” “Something You Need,” and covers of hits like Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun,” Chrissy, Will Ferri, Dan Gow had the crowd on their feet. Also onstage was Joe Simmons on the bass.

Visibly thrilled by the crowd’s cheering, at one point, drummer Will and Chrissy talked about this show being “the best show we’ve ever played” – though they asked the audience to give it their all since they were only about 3 songs in.

Later, Chrissy tweeted a photo of the Manila audience, saying how overwhelmed she was about the reactions from Pinoy fans.

Photos were also posted by the group’s official Twitter account and band member Daniel Gow.

The crowd worked up to fever pitch when it was time for Alex’s set.

“Manila, I can feel it right now, I can feel the love in the room,” he said, after the crowd let out on of its loudest shouts right after Alex’s  cover of Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.”

“I hear so many ‘I love yous’ out there, I love you too,” he told the crowd, before launching into his own “Bright Lights.”

Earlier during their Manila press conference, Alex and Against the Current had promised fans a varied show with lots of new music, and they did not disappoint.

One of the show’s high points came when Alex launched into one of his best-known covers, The Fray’s “How to Save a Life.”

“You guys sound amazing,” he told everyone, urging them to sing along.

“For my first time here, I can’t believe it, I really can’t believe it,” he said, shaking his head. “Oh my God, I love you too!”

Later, Chrissy also appeared to sing a medley of their well-known covers, including Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath,” Owl City’s “Good Time,” and Justin Bieber’s “Beauty and a Beat.”

Alex had the crowd singing along to his originals as well, including his own “Pretty Eyes,” “Wake Up Call,” and “Lightning,” plus covers that showed off his interest in different types of music – seen in performances of Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer,” Oasis’ “Wonderwall,” and ending with The Script’s “Breakeven.”

Alex later posted this on Instagram. “Manila, you were beautiful last night!! Thanks so much for the great show.”
