Doja Cat to host MTV 2021 VMAs

The rapper, who has five nominations this year, will also be performing during the awards show

Three-time Grammy nominee Doja Cat will be hosting this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on September 12, 8 pm ET, at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York.

The rapper-singer will also be performing a live set for the awards show, adding to MTV’s star-studded performer roster that includes Shawn Mendes, Chlöe, Machine Gun Kelly, Twenty One Pilots, Olivia Rodrigo, Lorde, Lil Nas X, the Foo Fighters, and Camila Cabello.

The 25-year-old artist boasts five nominations for the VMA’s this year, namely: Artist of the Year; Best Collaboration, and Video of the Year for “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA; Best Art Direction for “Best Friend” by Saweetie featuring Doja Cat; and Best Visual Effects for “You Right” with The Weekend. The recognition comes after the successful release of her 2021 album Planet Her,

The nominees list also features front-runners Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion, with seven and six nominations each, respectively. 

Doja Cat gained widespread success after the release of 2018 album Amara, featuring the viral meme track “Mooo!” Since then, the rapper has continued to make musical breakthroughs with catchy tracks like “Juicy,” “Tia Tamara,” and “Say So.” Earlier this year, she was nominated for Best New Artist, Record of The Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance during the Grammys, and won a Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Female Artist. – Jana Torres/Rappler.com
