John describes the album as 'the only record I've made that I listen to recreationally'

John Mayer released a new album Sob Rock on Friday, July 16 – his first solo offering since his 2017 album The Search for Everything.

The singer-songwriter said in a July 12 Instagram post that the album is “the only record I’ve made that I listen to recreationally.”

It contains 10 tracks, including lead single “Last Train Home,” where he collaborates with country pop artist Mareon Morris, and 2018’s “New Light,” a collaboration with producer No I.D.

Sob Rock subtly leans into a bright, sleek production that recalls the tech-driven sound of ’80s new wave – snare drums, synth keyboards, and all. With the addition of several crisp guitar solos, the album is distinctly John Mayer.

Collaborating with John on the album is Grammy Award-winning producer Don Was, who has worked with artists such as The Rolling Stones, the B-52s, and Bonnie Raitt, among others.
