LMP 2020 pushes through via an online platform

Culture, nationality, and art all come together in the upcoming Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino Music Festival, the first edition to be held completely online.

The annual music festival began in 2014 after it was declared that every last week of July would be dedicated to celebrate Filipino music. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was pushed to a later date.

Coming from the Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-Awit (OPM) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the week-long celebration of Filipino music aims to highlight local songwriters and artists around the Philippines. Performances, workshops, an open mic event and a culminating grand finale concert are just some of the few surprises #LMP2020 has in store. With the theme of “Musikang Pinoy, Buhay at Ipagpatuloy,” the organizers intend to uplift spirits in the middle of a pandemic.

Despite the numerous challenges of shifting to an entirely online operation, the organizers believe it’s important for the festival to push through especially because of the pandemic.

“We recognize the importance of Filipino music in uplifting our lives despite COVID-19,” executive director and festival co-director of OPM Dinah Remolacio said

Going digital

At an online press conference on August 19, festival director Noel Cabangon, National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, and pop singer Christian Bautista said that they were excited to go into the uncharted territory of online festivals.

The panelists were quick to mention the various advantages of going online – eliminating logistical concerns such as venues and scheduling, while giving them a bigger audience, since it’s completely online. Because of the wider reach, people are also able to discover new talent and rediscover older artists.

Festival “attendees” can also take part in OPM-ic, an open mic competition where anyone can submit either original work or an OPM cover, giving them a chance to be part of the festival itself.

The festival’s lineup this year includes artists from different regions in the country. Veterans such as the Itchyworms, Bayang Barrios, and Christian Bautista will be performing, alongside up and coming artists.

Various workshops and webinars, in partnership with PhilPop, will be hosted by some icons in the industry such as Ryan Cayabyab, Ebe Dancel, Jazz Nicolas, and more. The workshops are all free — all you need to do is to register at their official website.

OPM Archive Launch is also one of the highlights for this year’s LMP festival. It’s online archive that aims to preserve locally produced music over the years, giving people a chance to see OPM’s roots and its evolution. – Rappler.com
