Manila Community Radio celebrates first anniversary with online fiesta

Manila Community Radio

Listeners can join in on July 31 and August 8

Manila Community Radio (MCR) is marking its first year on air with an online fiesta – and everyone is invited.

The party will be held on Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 8, and the public can join in via www.manilacommunityradio.live.

The line-up for the celebration includes residents from founding collectives BuwanBuwan Collective, Ikigai Radio, transit records, and UNKNWN. Joining them are AHJU$$I , Bins & TISHA, BEDSPACER, Blitz, DALAGA, Edewhut, The Flying Lugaw, Pinoy Grooves, Pool Records, KL Sanctuary (Malaysia), Raymund Marasigan, and more.

Video shows will be introduced at the event.

The online radio platform first went live on July 8, 2020, and now counts over 1,000 hours of airplay and 670 shows staged by over 300 hosts.

The platform recently placed the spotlight on LGBTQIA+ acts for Pride Month, as part of their advocacy for diverse expression and visibility for underrepresented communities.

“MCR sincerely wants to ebrace free expresson – not only artistically, but also for minorities,” said co-founder Jeric Lim, who noted that many LGBTQIA+ safe spaces have closed down in the pandemic.

“We want to build something like those sanctuaries, if not to substitute the physical spaces entirely,” he said. – Rappler.com
