Jaya’s mom, comedian Elizabeth Ramsey dies at 83

MANILA, Philippines – Comedian Elizabeth Ramsey, the mother of soul singer Jaya, has died. She was 83 years old.

Jaya confirmed the death of her mother on her Facebook page. 

“Mama Beth is now with our Lord… 83 years has been full. Love and laughter, she has given not just our family but the whole nation. Thank you for your love and prayers and I rejoice because she passes in her sleep. In peace. In God’s loving arms. Bye mama, until we meet again. I love you forever. Thank you Jesus,” she wrote.

Last August, Jaya said her mother was rushed to the hospital after suffering a hyperglycemia attack due to diabetes.  In an interview on 24 Oras, Jaya said she almost lost hope when she saw her mom’s condition and at the same time, she was also preparing for what could happen. One of Elizabeth’s last appearances was during the first season of Your Face Sounds Familiar, where Melai Cantiveros impersonated her and performed “Waray Waray.”

Elizabeth Ramsey is known as the country’s “Queen of Rock and Roll” and original queen of comedy. She started her career when she won the Student Canteen contest in 1958. – Rappler.com
